Sherry Turkle is a professor at MIT for the Social Studies of Science and Technology in the Program in Science, Technology, and Society. She has a PhD from Harvard University in Sociology and Personality Psychology, as well as a Bachelor's of Arts in Social Studies from Harvard. Along with Alone Together, she has published seven other books, one of the most notable being The Second Self: Computers and the Human Spirit. Along with publishing books, she has also presented a TED talk, titled Connected, But Alone (found below) which expresses ideas from Alone Together. She has conducted a lot of research pertaining to psychology and technology, all of which has occurred in her 30 years working at MIT. According to her website:

She has been named "woman of the year" by Ms. Magazine and among the "forty under forty" who are changing the nation by Esquire Magazine. She is a featured media commentator on the social and psychological effects of technology for CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, the BBC, and NPR, including appearances on such programs as Nightline, Frontline, 20/20, and The Colbert Report."
It is clear to see that Sherry Turkle is a very influential woman, especially in the area of technology, and that she has a lot to teach about the information society.
